About George Gourley George Gourley, an artist from Unagh near Cookstown, draws inspiration from his rural upbringing and the six generations of farmers before him. Childhood journeys in his father’s Bedford lorry through the eastern Sperrins left him with lasting impressions of muted landscapes, weathered buildings, and everyday rural life. These memories strongly influence the subjects he paints today. George is known for his depictions of derelict farm buildings, traditional farming scenes, and rural communities. His muted colour palette reflects the soft tones and shadows of places shaped by time, giving his work a quiet and atmospheric quality. After 36 years teaching Art and Design at Cookstown High School, he retired early to focus entirely on his painting, further refining his craft. His aim is to capture and preserve a disappearing rural heritage. Many buildings he portrays feel as though the family has only just left, holding echoes of stories and lives that linger in their walls.
